The wildlifeis homogeneous and not much different to the one found in other sub antarctic forests. Among the mammals is the figure of the Huemul, one of the two native deer of this biome, the one that stands. A good swimmer, with a stocky build, big and wide ears, and with a brown fur, slightly darker in winter than in summer. While it does live in the lowlands for certain periods of the year, the Huemul makes an intensive use of the mountain ecosystem. During summer it moves mostly through the highlands, where it feeds on the grasses of the meadows and pastures, as well as shrubs, always close to the woods where it soughts shelter from predators such as the cougar. When winter approaches the Huemul descends to the lowlands searching for food. Among the felines the cougar is the most impressive. The highlights among the waterfowl are the Cauquenes or Hummingbirds, species like the elusive Chucao and the Tapacola. In the tree trunks one finds the bright Carpintero Patagónico. The most common birds of prey are the falcons, eagles, owls, black vultures and condors. The native fish fauna is composed by the Puyén, the Peladillas, the Patagonian silverside, the Velvet Catfish and the creek tiny catfish. The introduction of foreign salmons and trouts was devastating for the native fish as they were preyed on by these large species to near extinction. |
